Why is my Sberbank card being declined

In 9 cases out of 10, “the card won’t go through” is not a money problem but the bank’s security setting: an unconfirmed payment, a spent daily limit or online operations turned off. Almost all of it is fixed in a couple of minutes inside the bank app.

In short

First, confirm the payment with a push in the bank app (the SMS code doesn’t always arrive). If that doesn’t help, check the daily online limit and whether online payments are allowed on the card. A quick alternative is paying by the Faster Payments QR code: no 3DS needed. As a last resort — another card or a call to the bank.

01 / ConfirmationNo SMS? Wait for the push

Sberbank long ago moved online payment confirmation from SMS to a push in the app. If no SMS code arrives, it’s not a glitch: open the bank app, where a “Confirm the operation” prompt is waiting. Tap “Confirm” — the payment on our page completes by itself.

Faster Payments — pay without 3DSIf the code or push stubbornly won’t arrive, choose “Pay via Faster Payments (SBP)” on the payment page and scan the QR with your camera or from the bank app. The payment is confirmed inside the bank, without entering card data or a 3DS code — the most reliable workaround.

02 / LimitsDaily limit and restrictions

Buying a tour or a ticket is a large sum, and it often hits the daily online operations limit. By default it can be lower than the trip price. Raise it in the app: profile → “Security” → “Limits” → increase today’s online purchase limit.

  • Online payments disabled. Sometimes the card is closed to online entirely — enable online operations in the card settings.
  • Category (MCC) block. Travel categories may be turned off by parental controls or security settings.
  • Currency operations blocked. If the charge is in a foreign currency, the card may have a block on conversion and currency transfers.

03 / FundsFunds, expiry and hold

Sometimes it’s mundane. Check the balance including the hold: a previous payment attempt may have temporarily frozen the amount, leaving too little available for a second one. The hold clears on its own within a few days. Also make sure the card hasn’t expired and that you entered the expiry and CVC correctly.

Don’t retry the payment back-to-backSeveral quick retries create a chain of holds and can trip the bank’s anti-fraud — the card gets temporarily blocked. If an attempt fails, pause for 10—15 minutes or switch the payment method.

04 / DiagnosisWhat to do step by step

  1. 01Open the bank app and confirm the pending request with a push.
  2. 02Check the balance including any hold and the card expiry date.
  3. 03Raise the daily online limit to match the purchase amount.
  4. 04Enable online payments and remove the category block if one is set.
  5. 05Pay via the Faster Payments QR — it bypasses 3DS entirely.
  6. 06Use a different card or call the bank if nothing helped.
Money taken but no booking? If the amount left your account but there’s no confirmation, it’s almost always a hold, not a charge. An incomplete hold is returned automatically within a few days. Send us the order number — we’ll check the payment status in the acquiring system.

05 / FAQFrequently asked

Why now? The card worked before.

Usually the bank recently changed its default security settings, or the amount exceeded your daily limit for the first time. Less often it’s anti-fraud reacting to an unusual operation.

Is paying via Faster Payments safe?

Yes, it’s the Central Bank’s official payment service. You confirm the payment inside your own bank and never enter card details on a third-party page.

The charge is in foreign currency — what do I do?

Check whether currency operations are allowed on the card. If not, pay with a rouble card at the exchange rate or via Faster Payments. See the payment article for more on conversion.

Can I split the payment across cards?

A single order is paid with one card. But a tour can be split — for example, a deposit and a balance — or arranged in instalments. We’ll suggest the best option.
