Can you get an insurance refund

ISIgor SedovUpdated 14 May 20266 min read7 480 read

Insurance is the one travel purchase you hope never to use. If your plans change, the policy can often be refunded — but only while the coverage period hasn't started and no claim is yet possible.

In short

In short: a policy is usually refundable before its coverage starts — during the cooling-off window. Once the trip begins, a refund is generally no longer possible. If the whole trip is cancelled before departure, a partial refund is realistic. The insurer sets the exact terms — check your policy under My bookings or call 8 800 1000-646.

01 / WhenWhen a policy can be refunded

Whether you get money back comes down to one thing: has the coverage period started. While the cover isn't active and the trip hasn't begun, the insurer usually issues a refund. Once the period starts, the risk is already on cover, so a refund is generally not available.

Cooling-off windowMany insurers give you a few days after purchase to cancel the policy for a full refund — provided coverage hasn't started yet. Check your policy wording for the exact period.

02 / CancellationIf the entire trip is cancelled

If you cancel the whole trip before the departure date — say a tour or flight falls through — the insurer often returns part of the policy price, since the risk never materialised. The refund amount and any deductions are set by the insurer, so the final figure depends on your specific contract.

  • A refund is possible while the coverage period hasn't started.
  • The insurer may keep part of the sum as an administration fee.
  • If a claim has already been filed on the policy, no refund is possible.

03 / How to refundHow to request a policy refund

1

Open the order

Go to My bookings and find the order that contains the insurance policy.

2

Check the start date

Make sure the coverage start date hasn't passed yet — that's the key condition for a refund.

3

Request cancellation

Tap “Request refund” in the order, or message us at @sales_travel_bot. We'll pass the request to the insurer.

4

Wait for the decision

The insurer confirms the refundable amount, and the money returns to your original payment method.

TipIf the insurance was bought in the same order as a tour or tickets, cancel them together — the policy refund will then be processed alongside the main booking.

04 / ExceptionsWhen a refund isn't possible

The trip has begunOnce the coverage period starts, the insurer already carries the risk, so a refund is generally not possible — even if you never made a claim. The same applies to policies required for a visa: they often can't be refunded while the visa is valid.

The terms are always set by the insurer, not by Sales.Travel. If you're unsure whether your particular policy is refundable, check with support — we'll review your contract's rules and walk you through the exact scenario.

05 / FAQFrequently asked

Can I refund insurance after the trip starts?

Usually no: once coverage starts, the policy is on cover and the insurer keeps its price. Exceptions are rare and depend on the contract.

How much comes back if the whole trip is cancelled?

If coverage hasn't started, a portion is often returned, minus the insurer's fee. The exact amount is confirmed by the insurance company.

Where will the policy refund go?

To the same payment method you used for the order. Timing depends on your bank and the insurer — usually a few business days.

What's the fastest way to check my policy terms?

Open the order under My bookings or message @sales_travel_bot — we'll review your contract rules. Support line: 8 800 1000-646.
