Discounts for children and infants

NPNatalia PrivalovaUpdated 14 May 20265 min read13 215 read

A child’s age is counted on the date of each flight, not the date you buy the ticket. This decides the passenger category, the discount and whether a separate seat is needed.

In short

An infant under 2 years travels without a separate seat, held in arms — usually about 10% of the adult fare (~90% off). A child aged 2—11 takes a separate seat at a discount, typically around 25%. You’ll need a birth certificate or the child’s passport. If a child turns 2 during the trip, the return segment is booked as a “child” with a seat.

01 / CategoriesInfant, child, adult

Airlines split young travellers into two categories by age. The category drives the price, the seat and the baggage allowance. The exact percentages differ between carriers, so the figures below are typical benchmarks.

Discounts depend on the fareA child discount isn’t applied to every fare: the cheapest promo tickets may carry none, in which case a child seat costs the same as an adult one. The exact figure always appears once you add the child to the search.

02 / InfantInfant without a seat

An infant under 2 flies in an adult’s arms without a separate seat. One adult may carry only one lap infant. The baggage allowance is usually small — often ~10 kg — plus a free foldable stroller and sometimes a car seat.

  • Bassinet — on long-haul flights you can request a bulkhead bassinet; numbers are limited, so book early.
  • Stroller to the gate — a foldable stroller is usually allowed up to the boarding gate and handed over at the aircraft door.
  • Turning 2 mid-trip — if a child turns 2 between the outbound and return flights, the return segment is booked as a “child” with a separate seat.

03 / DocumentsWhich documents you need

  • Domestic flights in Russia: a birth certificate for children under 14.
  • International: the child’s own foreign passport; adding the child to a parent’s passport is usually not enough to fly.
  • Consent to travel — some countries require notarised consent from the other parent if the child flies without them.
  • Visa: issued for the child separately, just like for an adult.

04 / Add to bookingHow to add a child to the search

1

Specify children in the search form

In the “Passengers” block set the number of adults, children 2—11 and infants under 2, then the exact age of each child — the fare recalculates instantly.

2

Check the price per passenger

In the fare breakdown the price is split per passenger: adult, discounted child and infant — so the total saving is clear.

3

Enter the document details

For each child enter the full name and date of birth exactly as in the document. An age error can drop the child fare.

4

Add a bassinet or escort

If needed, request a bassinet for the infant or the unaccompanied-minor service in the booking’s extras.

Unaccompanied minor serviceIf a child flies alone, the airline offers an unaccompanied-minor (UM) service: a staff member meets the child, hands them to the crew and delivers them to the named adult on arrival. It’s a paid, pre-booked service and is mandatory for certain ages.

05 / BaggageBaggage and stroller

  • Infant — often ~10 kg of checked baggage plus a free foldable stroller.
  • Child with a seat — the same baggage allowance as an adult on the same fare.
  • Child car seat — often checked free on top of the allowance; confirm with the carrier.

06 / FAQFrequently asked

How many child discounts can I apply?

The discount applies to every eligible child in the booking. However, one adult may carry only one lap infant — a second one needs a separate seat.

My child turns 2 during the trip — what do I do?

The outbound segment is issued as a lap infant, and the return as a child with a separate seat and the matching fare. The system suggests the correct category automatically.

Can I sit next to my child for free?

Many airlines try to seat a parent next to a child at no charge, but a guarantee comes only with paid seat selection. Check in as soon as the window opens.

Is the discount for the tour or only the flight?

This article is about flights. In package tours child prices are set separately (sharing the parents’ room, meals) and are shown on the tour card.
