An eSIM is a built-in SIM you never have to physically insert. Buy a data package in the app, install it via QR code, and you're online the moment you land — no roaming, no hunting for a kiosk at the airport. Here's who it's for, how to pick a provider, and how to avoid overpaying.
What Is an eSIM
and who it's for
A travel eSIM gives you mobile data (and sometimes a phone number) in your destination country at local rates — typically 5–20 times cheaper than your home carrier's roaming. Your physical SIM stays put and keeps handling calls and texts from your bank back home, while data runs through the eSIM.
Check your phone: eSIM is supported on iPhone XS and later, Pixel 3 and later, Samsung S20 and later. Path: Settings → About → look for "eSIM availability" or an EID. The device must not be carrier-locked.
How to Choose
a Provider
01
Airalo
The largest eSIM marketplace, covering 200+ countries. Local and regional data-only packages, cheap for short trips.
02
Holafly
Unlimited data billed by the day. Pricier per gigabyte, but convenient if you rely heavily on maps, video, and social media.
03
Saily
From the makers of NordVPN: a simple app, built-in data protection, and competitive per-gigabyte pricing.
04
Local eSIM on arrival
Sometimes the cheapest option (buying directly from the country's own carrier), but it means purchasing on the spot and sometimes showing a passport to register.

Activation
in 5 Minutes
01
Buy a package before you fly
Pick a country and data allowance in the provider's app. Pay by card and the eSIM arrives instantly as a QR code.
02
Install it over home Wi-Fi
Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan the QR code. The profile downloads — that's the "installation" step done.
03
Set it as your data line
On arrival, make the eSIM active for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it (it's free within your package).
04
Turn off data on your primary SIM
So your home carrier doesn't bill you for roaming. Calls and texts (including bank codes) will keep working on it.
