Flights are one of the biggest line items in any trip budget — yet two people on the same plane can pay wildly different prices. The gap comes down to knowing the system, not luck. Here are ten tactics that actually work.
1–3. Timing, weekdays
and flexible dates
Airlines re-price fares roughly three times a week. The lowest fares tend to surface on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, right after marketing teams "clear out" seats on Monday. Flying at the crack of dawn or late at night is typically 10–20% cheaper than a midday departure.
The single biggest date hack: shift your departure by 1–2 days in either direction. On popular routes, the price gap between a Friday and a Sunday flight can hit 40%.
4–6. Airports, connections
and price alerts
7–10. Low-cost carriers, seasonality,
split ticketing and sales
- ▸
Low-cost carriers. Wizz Air, IndiGo, AirAsia — often half the price of a legacy carrier. Watch for "carry-on only" fares.
- ▸
Off-season. Egypt in May, the Maldives in October, Bali in June — the weather barely suffers, but fares run 25–40% lower.
- ▸
Split ticketing. Moscow → Amsterdam → New York: two separate tickets on KLM and Delta can cost less than one through-fare.
- ▸
Black Friday. Most airlines run sales in November. Subscribe to Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines and Emirates newsletters.
