The most common myth after online check-in is that you still have to queue at the main check-in desk with your suitcase. You don't — airports keep a separate, faster bag drop counter just for you.
If you've checked in online and have bags to put in the hold, look for the Drop Off (Bag Drop) counter at the airport — they take suitcases without a second check-in. Arrive early: bag drop closes before the gate does. Your boarding passes and itinerary are in My bookings.
01 / Where to goWhere to take your bags after online check-in
After online check-in you already have a boarding pass — your seat is secured. Only one task remains at the airport: handing over your suitcases. That's what the Drop Off counter is for (signs and screens may also call it Bag Drop or «Baggage drop»). It's usually a separate counter and moves faster than full check-in, because you don't need to be checked in again.
02 / Step by stepWhat happens at the bag drop counter
Find the Drop Off / Bag Drop sign
Use the departures board and signage in the check-in hall — bag drop counters are usually next to your airline's regular desks.
Show your boarding pass and ID
Have your boarding pass (in the app or printed) and passport ready. There's no re-check-in — staff verify your details and print a bag tag.
Drop the suitcase and keep the receipt
The suitcase goes onto the belt and you get a tag stub with the baggage number. Keep it until you collect your bag at arrivals.
Proceed to security
Next comes the pre-flight security check, passport control (on international flights) and the gate shown on your boarding pass.
03 / TimingWhen to arrive: bag drop closes before boarding
The big trap of online check-in is feeling you can turn up just before departure. You can't: bag drop closes before the gate does. On international flights, bag drop usually stops around 60 minutes or more before departure. The exact cut-off depends on the airline and airport — check the carrier's rules.
04 / Good to knowWhat makes bag drop smoother
- Self-service kiosks. At larger airports some Drop Off points are self-service: you print the tag and place the suitcase on the belt yourself.
- Weigh it at home. Excess is charged on the spot — check your fare's allowance in advance to avoid paying at the desk.
- Documents ready. Keep your passport and boarding pass at hand; on international flights you may be asked for a visa or proof of entry.
- Fragile and valuable items. Keep electronics, medication and documents in your carry-on rather than the hold.
05 / FAQFrequently asked questions
I checked in online — do I need to visit a counter at all?
Only if you have bags for the hold. With a suitcase, go to Drop Off. If you're flying with carry-on only, head straight to security and the gate.
How is Drop Off different from regular check-in?
At Drop Off you're not checked in again — you already have a boarding pass. Staff just verify your documents and tag your bag, so the line usually moves faster.
When does bag drop close?
Before the gate. On international flights bag drop usually closes 60 minutes or more before departure; on domestic flights, a little later. Check the exact time in your airline's rules.
Where do I get the boarding pass for bag drop?
It's issued during online check-in — see the «Online check-in» article. The pass and itinerary are available in My bookings, in the app or printed.
